Why Me?

This role brings together a lifetime of lived Autism and ADHD experience, a specialist career in education including dyslexia assessor, specialist teacher and SENCo, certified ADHD, academic resilience and wellbeing youth coach,  but most importantly a passion for supporting young people to feel empowered, to recognise and utilise their strengths and ensuring protective factors are in place according to their very personal and specific needs and past experiences, so they can fully embrace everything their unique way of experiencing and being in the world offers.

With one undergraduate degree and 4 postgraduate degrees plus one abandoned post graduate qualification, I offer a creative and curious, non judgemental and knowledgeable approach which places the student and their experiences, their priorities at the heart of the process and mentoring partnership.

I have completed all additional training required for this role, including specific training on supporting university students with Autism and ADHD and am now included on the SLC/DfE official register of individual NMH providers under my company AuDHD Forward Ltd.

I appreciate how valuable an opportunity to establish a professional working relationship with the student support team within a specific HE institution and would be eager to prioritise such a way of working.

The value of ‘lived experience’ – Autism and ADHD

Although my lived experience is not directly relevant to the students I support I know it helps me to empathise, know where sticking points may be, embrace curiosity in exploring and understanding oneself, understand the importance of sensory awareness, lack of judgement, openness and clarity in communication.

With a late diagnosis myself I understand how important and empowering it is for students to really understand, accept and be in a position to embrace their unique profile.

In particular with university students the phrase “One autistic person may be of many ages,” really resonates on a personal level and means I come to the role without judgement, assumptions or preconceived ideas about either the issues or solutions.

I also know from personal experience how essential it is for solutions to come from the student but also how empowering knowledge is, particularly when it validates and offers an explanation for your seemingly unique experiences, strengths and challenges.
